To see an example of a "simple", sturdy and surprisingly inexpensive design
take a look at the Arrow dual band j-pole or ground plane...  Would be easy
to replicate but for the price would be easy to justify purchasing complete
as well.  I recall that they got good reviews on eham, for what that is
worth...
