I tried virt for disk and network. This still hangs. I tried AHCI which also hangs. As you mentioned vmware workstation is now free, I will try that next. None of my linux VirtualBox vms had trouble.

But you should try not using IDE for hard disk and cdrom. Ahci or virtio are preferable. Or maybe nvme.
