I tried virt for disk and network.  This still hangs.  I tried AHCI which also 
hangs.  As you mentioned vmware workstation is now free, I will try that next.  
None of my linux VirtualBox vms had trouble.

Thanks. Nothing particularily weird stands out and I am not familiar with 
virtualbox. But you should try not using IDE for hard disk and cdrom. Ahci 
or virtio are preferable. Or maybe nvme.
