I did try virtio but I don't recall the result.  I will retry and let you know. 
 I added a serial console a VirtualBox machine and switched to it at boot>.

Have you tried virtio network instead of e1000? Also, it would be helpful 
if you could somehow post the full console output from the boot, either by 
redirecting it to a serial console, or if it does not hang all the time by 
doing dmesg via ssh.
