Thanks for the ideas. A new observation: as for as I can tell, the problem (almost) only happens when Firefox is running. Note I'm not necessarily typing into Firefox --- the problem occurs when typing into an xterm with all my Firefox windows hidden. I say "almost" because I also see it when I type my username into xenodm; of course, Firefox is not running then but often a few letters are lost. I've tried spending periods of time using Chrome instead of Firefox, (or with no browser running) and as far as I can tell, the problem has never happened during those periods. Re particular suggestions: I normally use a USB hub, but have also seen the problem without it. I will try unplugging and re-plugging, but note the problem is already very short-lived and intermittent; by the time I notice it's happened, all I have to do is press a key and everything's back to normal until who knows when. -- James
