Thanks for the sugestion. Unfortunatly, "which" is not supplied with MSYS/MinGW. I can not build it as pwd.h is not ported yet. However, cygwin does have a version, which is a work around.

me that checking the version value should be able to tell you much more
easily whether you have the correct version or not.

How about just typing 'which make', before running it?
