Since you are compiling fontforge from source, you would install the python bindings that comes along with the fontforge sources. There is nothing wrong with python 2.6, you simply follow instructions in pyhook/README from the fontforge sources. To test that you have everything setup properly, launch python and type "import fontforge" to see if it finds the module.
