I can download and install python 2.7 but if you clobber the install 2.6 on 10.04 it does 'funny' things. I tried an altinstall after compiling 2.7 seperately and then did a symlink from /usr/bin/python to the 2.7 binary, that kinda-sorta-worked but then it kinda-sorta-didn't and I got odd things in terminal sessions.
