As you say, you can't avoid "fuzzying" lines when resizing in graphics programs. However, they do their best to anti-alias and so they aren't jagged. Attached are a test file that produces the attached PDF. This shows 4 options: original; cropped of white space; sized with PaintShop; and sized by forcing the image height in texi2pdf. I would go with option 3, but could accept option 4. Whaddya think?
(P.S. for non-text files like this, do making an pushing patches work in the same way?)
