I'd quite like it to work easily on OSX, although I think that

I don't really agree with you on this. There are some people using
lilypond-book and latex that are not programmers (and are not
interested in being one). At least not enough to pass ahead the
scheme that we normally use in lilypond. Lilypond language is just
like latex!
And you have to know lots of programming things to get to the
shebang. The error message just complaints of your python version.
What to do then?
1- Give up and run Sibelius
2- Google for something like 'python for mac'
After (2) you manage to find http://wiki.python.org/moin/MacPython/
PythonDistributionsForMac
and you might even find the right download for your system.
When you try to run LPB again you get... the same error!!
you think that the thing doesn't work or you could not install the
python-thingy correctly. What to do?
1- Give up and run Sibelius
2- Call your computer guy/girl friend
3- oh! you are computer guy/girl! cool!
If you know anything of scripting you'll try to open file
that's running.
you look at the file. It's python.
If you have any experience with shell scripting and you happen
to look at the shebang, you've got it!
Now, you just have to chenge it in every mac you've installed
the damn thing...

Cláudia
The part of this that bothers me the most is that even after you
install python 2.4, after you change convert-ly to have #!/usr/bin/
env python, when you open the LilyPond.app and try and run convert-ly
on a file, it still fails. It was the most frustrating thing to
realise that convert-ly only works in the terminal. So users who are
not technically savvy, and manage to follow all of the instructions
in the documentation for setting up convert-ly, are left in the end
having spent hours trying to find, understand and execute the steps
in order to not be able to use the program, and have no information
as to how to use it.
