Issue 707: Enhancement: an invisible Voice dedicated to Lyrics alignment. http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=707
New issue report by v.villenave: A while ago, Erik Sandberg proposed to use the DevNull context to align lyrics to an invisible voice: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-devel/2006-05/msg00379.html As illustrated in Issue 248 and Issue 247, however, this trick has downsides and therefore is no longer recommended. This led Mats to request a feature that would somehow make it "possible to place the lyrics according to a Voice that's not typeset." "Erik's proposal was a response to such a request to be able to typeset the lyrics of a song over a guitar accompaniment, without typesetting the song itself. If you ever played a Bach cantata, you know that the same principle often is used in the instrumental parts for the arias and recitatives, where the lyrics is typeset on top of the instrumental part to make it simpler to follow, but the where it would require too much space to also typeset the full song part." It is also very much used in modern operas/musicals (Bernstein and others).
