Is there a better template I (as a lilypond toe-dabbler) should be using? I'm afraid that I don't have the expertise to contribute one! FWIW: piano-dynamics.ly seemed like a good logical match to what I thought I wanted to do, and the "extra-offset" is used in a part of the resulting file that doesn't get touched during note entry editing.
