-start nitpicking- Correction: Only *work* does. It need not be hard work, as it can also be fun :) When many more people should join to have fun hacking on the Hurd, that should equal fewer people working really hard (and might even archieve more, since having fun is a very efficient way of working). The work I do with the news is not *hard* work, since it is also fun to me, but it is work nontheless (and I hope it helps the Hurd, for example by getting more people join in having fun hacking on the Hurd :) ). -stop nitpicking- ;) > > Since the Hurd has bindings for using common Lisp for translators, you > > can in fact use Lisp to write part of an OS (the attached snapshot is the > > version from Tue Sep 16 15:50:43 2008 - I had a disk failure which ate a > > part of the repositories history; I already asked Flavio if he still has > > an intact clone lying around). > > If that is technically efficient, I will happily go with this :) I didn't yet try it (since I can't program in Lisp), but the example translators look like it's quite useful (I didn't yet test them): - tmpfs: http://bitbucket.org/ArneBab/cl-hurd/src/tip/examples/tmp- translator.lisp - zip: http://bitbucket.org/ArneBab/cl-hurd/src/tip/zip-translator/zip- translator.lisp - irc: http://bitbucket.org/ArneBab/cl-hurd/src/tip/irc-translator/irc- translator.lisp Along with namespace based translator selection, We should now be able to do things like this (might require smaller modification, since I didn't test this): $ ls blah.zip,,unzip.lisp :) If you test them, please tell me the results!
