I spoke with youpi and andrei on IRC for a while and they gave me a few
suggestions to see what the problem was.  They concluded that it was
something to do with my qemu configuration on my system.  I run Ubuntu 7.10
and home and Ubuntu 7.10 AMD64 at work and had identical problems.
Switching to kvm, which I assume has different configuration settings fixed
the problem.
