The networking was working, so I have also tested it on K16.  It just
doesn't work anymore and I don't understand why, since I don't think I've
changed anything recently.

Neither did tschwinge, but apparently Ubuntu uses a default NIC that the
Hurd doesn't detect.  tschwinge recommended that I specify the NIC, and it
was detected.
