I like it. The only thing I'm not quite sure about is the last phrase, because I fear, that too many people could think too much about the money when applying. It's a major part of the GSoC, that people get paid for it, but I miss the "innovation" and the "for the good of society" aspect in that sentence. It should somehow convey the essence of the Hurd, I think (every text which will be read as standalone should convey this essence). How about this small addition?
