has no benefit Well, I think there is a small benefit to having smaller directories (in whatever scheme) than one gigantic directory, even if it is nothing beyond "subdirectories for the sake of subdirectories". Technically, browsing it on the web is a lot faster. Mentally, it's hard to get a grip on 500 files in a directory listing. in exchange for some significant benefit.
