Thanks for the object files. With them I was able to reproduce the behaviour that you describe. I have uploaded two patches. The first, to bfd/elf.c, fixes the problem with strange warning message about an invalid string offset. (It was actually caused by a function trying to read symbols from beyond the end of the symbol section). I have also uploaded a second patch to elf64-hppa.c which I think is a better fix for the original problem. (The first patch is not wrong and can be left applied, I just think that it does not solve the real problem). Please could you try out this second patch as well and let me know how you get on.
