Define "fast".

A joining alternative that avoids subshells:

        printf -v new '%s,' "${arr[@]}"
        new=${new%?}

Another:

        strjoin() {
                local IFS=$1
                shift
                REPLY=$*
        }
        strjoin , "${arr[@]}"
        new=$REPLY
