We'd need to research an appropriate old release of bash (or whatever). Note
that the systems that don't have _any_ shell where $(...) doesn't work are
even older than the systems where it doesn't work in /bin/sh, and are probably
only of interest for retrocomputing nowadays, so this is low priority.
