I thought of that and double checked. We're using the USB port. It runs fine on
windows, so it isn't the cable. I tried all 4 ports on the linux box and none
of them worked. I tried other USB devices and they worked.

Nothing at all. It looks as though I'm not going to be able to use this device
on Linux.
