I had a friend whose apartment was pretty well trashed by the '89 quake. He had lots of books that got dumped on the floor. He stacked them back up in various places, including his stove. When the electricity came back on... well, it was a bad idea to stack them on the stove. He'd been making dinner, so at least one of the surface elements was turned on... and he didn't think to turn everything off. He lost just about everything in the fire. Nick i think i will have a seismic cutoff valve installed after all these stories. every once in a while you hear a story of a flying cow landing in a tree, or a house reduced to kindling but the family survived, including the baby found buried under the rubble, still alive... jon
