Are you saying the poll is wrong? If so, what do you base your understanding of public sentiment on? Do you have other data? It's true that most people want to start a withdrawal. But, at the same time, most people are opposed to Congress withholding funding for the war. I don't doubt that many/most liberal Democrats want the Democratic Congress to force Bush's hand on Iraq by simply refusing to fund the war. But, this would result in Congress ignoring the will of the American people. Quoting the Christian Science Monitor from the time of the voting: <quote> Asked who should have the final say about troop levels in Iraq, 57 percent say it should be Congress; only 35 percent say it should be the president, according to the same poll. But pressed to say whether Congress should continue withholding funding after a presidential veto until the president yields, only 36 percent supported that idea and 56 percent opposed it. <end quote> I've seen a number of polls that indicate this general trend. Also, I think it is fair to say that the president would play politics with this, and extend the deployment until money would have to be allocated simply to pay the troops in Iraq; provide them with necessary equipment, etc. It was a no win situation for the Democrats.
