"A child is killed by a gun every three hours in America.
According to the latest statistics, nearly 1,000 children under
19 are shot dead every year.
No time to wade into this in any depth, but 1 child every 3 hours
= 8 * 365 = 2920, not "nearly 1,000" -- Unless the first sentence
uses some other definition of "child" or "killed" or "gun" than
the second sentence.
You are overlooking bayonets and bludgeoning with the stock :-)
See: I knew there was a perfectly unreasonable explanation. The
second sentence clearly says *shot* dead every year. It doesn't
include those who were strangled to death using the shoulder strap or
tickled to death with the cleaning rags.
