I love the view from my back porch, it is over a wooded river that is
usually about 10 inches deep and 30 feet wide on bedrock. The bank is about
10 feet over the riverbed. I live about 7 miles below a small county dam.
Today I got calls from several people at work because they had heard that my
town is being evacuated due to the flood gates imminent opening.
After rushing home to see if I could salvage anything before the waters
rose, I found that the river is up to within 24 inches of the bank and they
are potentially going to open the floodgates to relieve pressure on the dam.
It could happen anytime between midnight tonight and sometime Saturday (if
at all). If that happens, it will completely submerge the first floor and
even possibly the second floor.
The really good news is that both of my kids, and my mom were all well away
from the flood area (work, sitter, school) and I had about 6 hours to pack
up the things that are really important to us (my daughter is pissed because
I didn't get her Johnny Depp poster!). After packing the car full of
pictures, the computer, clothes, and other selected items, I was able to
carry everything else upstairs to the second floor. If it floods as much as
they say it could, items on the second floor might not be safe either, but
it is worth a shot.
Of course regular renters and homeowners insurance doesn't cover flooding,
so if I flood, I am stuck unless someone loots the apartment or it burns
down. Talk about mixed emotions!
The thing that amazed me was the internal dialog that I had going when I was
trying to decide on what items to save and what to leave in the townhouse on
the second floor. I think that I have most everything that might be
irreplaceable. So if it does indeed flood, I can be thankful that I had some
warning.
My laptop and router are the last two things to be packed in the car as soon
as I send this and a few other emails.

Signing off and climbing into the ark.....

Hoping that this was ultimately an unnecessary precaution Maru.
