PSS was a very, very hard book to read. I wrote a review that said
something to the effect that "I hadn't had to wade through that much glp
since "Dhalgren." I read the whole thing for two reasons: first, I finish
what I start* and second, it was a Hugo nominee and I read all of them.

The next year, Mieville's "The Scar" was a Hugo nominee and it was with much
trepidation that I entered those waters. To my delight (and surprise), "The
Scar" was very good.

They bo9th ahve SF elements, but are really fantasy, IMO.
