"Science"? Including classical science fiction elements does not make a story "science fiction" to me. They have to be used according to a rigorous internal logic.
So you agree that 'Star Wars' isn't science fiction then?
(I note no one is defending _Animal Farm_.)
Defending its categorization? The SF Encyclopedia says it is one of the two Orwell books 'of sf interest' (the other being Nineteen Eighty-Four). It is also a fable, a satire, an allegory and a fantasy. These categories are not mutually exclusive. One of the features of sf is that it is the most 'mix-in' of genres, borrowing from everywhere.
Having said that _Animal Farm_ falls outside my personal view of sf, but as I said earlier I'm going with Authority here for simplicity.
William will add books to the list as they are suggested - I believe that's how most, if not all of the books listed got there.
O.K.. But it doesn't have to be an encyclopedic listing. I noticed Greg Bear's _Slant_ wasn't there, but don't care, because many of his other books are.
It is now :)

How long a minute is depends on which side of the bathroom door you're on.
