Someone who thinks the average American is an idiot is
perhaps not best-suited to judging the mainstream,
Tom. Given what you've said so many times on this
list, I do take right-wing as a compliment, although
it is not, of course, accurate in an absolute sense.

My parents (to pick an example) are both liberal
Democrats, and have both, on various occasions,
described NPR as being off the deep end to me. Heck,
I remember working in the basement of a Kennedy family
member on his campaign for the state legislature and
having him, his campaign manager, and me turn to the
radio at one point during the day (while NPR was on)
with a collective "what the hell?" reaction to how off
the deep end it was.

At any rate, certainly there are things that the
government funds that I disagree with. Very few of
those are speech. Taxing me to support leftist
propaganda is, in and of itself, in appropriate.
Taxing me to support _any_ propaganda is
inappropriate, but taxing Americans to support the
propaganda of people who believe what _you_ believe is
singularly inappropriate. There is a reason that
Voice of America is not supposed to be listened to in
the United States. Coerced speech is a violation of
the most fundamental principles of the United States.
It is ironic and revelatory that people who think
preventing flag burning is an atrocity are fine with NPR.
