These tests involved direct 3,600 degree F brazing torches (provided by
Discovery). I believe that is 1,000 degrees F beyond anything the
Shuttle has seen (according to the NASA site. It is also light and
apparently cheap. If it can't take the liftoff pressures, coat it with
something light that can. Who cares if it burns off later. This looks
like it has potential. Anyone care to offer their head with a shuttle
tile for the same test??? It appears that the Shuttle tiles of a
comparable thickness would not be expected to survive 1/4th of this kind
of heat.
