I saw Doug's pointing back to your original explanation, and I have a question: Is Diwali considered a religious festival (ie: like Easter or Passover, mainly celebrated just by those of that religious persuasion), a secular festival (ie: like Halloween here in the US, which has lost virtually all its religious roots/ties), or some combo of the two (ie: like Christmas, a religious holiday here that is also widely celebrated by non-religious people)? Just curious.
