Yes.
1) On the street leading to our old street, they had one set up for
awhile. People were confused about it and complained, apparently.
2) On our old street they set one up. More complaints. You'd think
they'd be grateful for pointing out their speed when they were about to
enter a school zone (and sometimes speed trap).
3) Much more recently, on FM 685 in Pflugerville around the point where
the speed limit dropped from 55 to 50; that was a really good reminder
for at least *some* people that you really oughtn't be going 60 at that
point.
4) And I think I saw one on Dessau Rd. (which is the same road as FM
685 south of Pecan St. in Pflugerville and going down into Austin) not
too long ago, again, in an area that would make a very nice speed trap.
I think that this would be a good sort of thing to set up for a couple
of weeks, and then take it down and just have a speed trap there. If
you travel that road on a regular basis, which is going to be most of
the cars on the road, you'd have a good *reminder* for awhile and
feedback to adjust your driving habits if they needed it, and shortly
after that, you're just asking for it if you haven't altered your
speeding habits right there.
One feature that the ones I saw more recently had was, if you were going
at or under 5 miles above the speed limit, the numbers were displayed in
green, but if you were going over 5 miles above the speed limit, they
were displayed in red. For the non-color-blind, this is a good added
bit of feedback. (I think you have to be going over 60 in the 50 zone
south of Pecan St. on Dessau Rd. before they make the effort to ticket
you; I try to keep it below 55, or below the 50th percentile on speed,
whichever is higher, on that particular stretch.)
Oh, one more -- I think I saw one at Austin-Bergstrom International
Airport as I was approaching the drop-off area when I was dropping Dan
off at the airport one time last year. *Very* good, since you go in a
short amount of time from a 40 zone to a 10 or 15 zone (and that slower
zone is for very, very good reasons, most of them on 2 legs and dealing
with luggage).
