That's not the way we ever accounted for cousins. My mothers cousins were always counted as second cousins to me.
Is there an official means of counting cousins?
I did a Google search on "second cousin" (without the quotes) and found several sites that say pretty much the same thing that I did above.
Here's a sample link that does a pretty good job of explaining it: http://www.kiva.net/~markh/cousin.html Excerpt: What's A Second-Cousin Twice-Removed? 'Removed' indicates that the two people being compared are a different number of generations away from their common ancestor.
The other part of the phrase, 'first cousin,' 'second cousin,' 'third cousin,' etc., describes the relationship of two people who are/were in the same generation.
And this site has a chart: http://www.got-genealogy.com/relchart.html
Hope that helps!
