That counterpoint is true as it goes for the current fuel cell designs, but I've read that while initially the cost and weight would be identical several very promising areas of improvement have been identfied. And yes, there's the political aspect. I don't think the right approach is taken to introducing them. AFAIK, it's simple - ban all new cars from using engines which are simple petrol-burning ones after say 2010. Don't push for any particular replacement, let the market sort THAT out.
