Hi.
If I remember rightly, whether you get upgrades is attached to how
often you die, as is the health of one particularly brutal enemy.
As Paul said the game is meant to be harsh and need you to die a while,
however the later game is awesome and has some fantastic systems as well
as lots to explore and some really difficult moral choices.
I really enjoyed it myself and intend to play it again when I have some
time.
All the best,
Dark.

Hi Jude,
Did you continue with the ensign? It is difficult , but its built like that
for a reason, a lot of people give up on it as they keep dyeing. there's a
spoiler below if you're interested, don't read any further if you don't
want to know:
Major Spoiler below:
So I haven't played in a while, but I read an article on the game by the
developer when I did finally complete it, he actually deliberately built the
game so you have to die a few times when you first start out and I believe
each time you die you then start with a little more equipment and more of
the map displayed also if you refuse the food to start with the game
becomes a lot more difficult to complete as if I remember correctly you
don't then get the compass either. If you enjoyed the dark room though it's
definitely worth persevering with as it fills some of the backstory around
a dark room, but yeah your right its definitely a brutal game , but it does
get easier as you continue through the game.

One of the tricks for playing the ensign is if you clear a location of
enemies, save and close down the game. Then play later and maybe you
survive clearing out your next combat zone but don't bet the farm on it.
