Hi Dan!
Instead of the program access and defaults thing you can also do it in
Internet Explorer itself:
1. Go to tools, then Internet options
2. There find the programs tab
3. Tab till you get to "set as default" button; press space on it to confirm
it
4. Tab to OK and close the options
Well, that's it :)

Would you consider walking me through setting program access and defaults so
as to make internet explorer my browser? I'm scared to do anything in there
for fear of messing things up worse. thanks,

Dan
