Basically - like said in other mail it basically let's the sighted computer
user identify a file type without reading the file extension, and instead of
a full size icon, it's shrunken small enough to fit more of them into a
smaller/longer list view as such.
On the other hand, if I'm showing a folder full of image files related to
something like a picture gallery's contents for a website or something like
that to a sighted person, I will under the view menu in windows explorer
switch over to thumbnail view so they can literally scan through the pics in
large bunches at a time, since they then get switched over to a sort of
minituarised version of the pics, in sort of row/column layout, where they
can sort of see what the pictures contain, without looking at all details.
That's a larger version of a picture/icon per file as well then.
Stay well

From wiktionary:
2. A rough sketch (e.g., the size of one's thumbnail).
3. (chiefly computing) A small picture, used as a compact representation
of
a larger image.

Thumbnails are smaller/shrunken versions of file type icons in this
case -
small graphical representation of file type for sighted guys so they
don't
have to, for example, read the .doc extension of a word document file
since
they'll see a small picture/icon next to it that looks like a piece of
white
paper, with a light blue capital letter W on it if I remember that one
correctly from old days.

What does that mean and what are thum nails?
