Thumbnails are smaller/shrunken versions of file type icons in this case - 
small graphical representation of file type for sighted guys so they don't 
have to, for example, read the .doc extension of a word document file since 
they'll see a small picture/icon next to it that looks like a piece of white

paper, with a light blue capital letter W on it if I remember that one 
correctly from old days.
