In addition to ease of use, most sound and recording buffs prefer external sound cards because inside a PC case, whether laptop or desktop. has lots of high speed electronics which generates a lot of noise. The external sound cards do not need to shield against as much noise and should generate / digitize a purer signal. However, I have not been able to hear the difference.
