There is absolutely no benefit to defragging a flash drive because you will gain no improvement in performance like you would when you defrag a hard drive. This is because a flash drive uses solid state memory with no moving parts, so files are not broken up into chunks like they are on a hard drive. In fact, frequently defragging a flash drive can actually be detrimental because it will add unnecessary read/write cycles that may ultimately shorten its useful life . Do not confuse defragging with reformatting, which has no harmful effect on a flash drive.

Hi
I have been in total ignorance about defragging these drives and therefore defragged my flash drive a few times with no noticeable troubles. The truth is they are so small that I doubt defragging them helps speed them up. Just my thoughts.

God bless,
Mark

Not sure, I do know that from what I have read, you don't really need to
defrag flashdrives, but, as far as formatting, it's just a matter to how
much you read and write back and forth to the drive that can make it go bad.

They are supposed to have a life span of so many read/writes, but, I have
never had a flashdrive go bad yet so I can't really give any guesses to how
long that may actually be. I have actually thaught of doing linux installs
to a flashdrive and this is where I got this info.

I must print a retraction because my memory failed me earlier. Smart
computing mentions defragmenting a flash drive is not good for them, I do
not recall anything mentioning reformatting.
