Weather: Moderate west winds persisted throughout the day. Cloud cover began at 95% and gradually decreased throughout the day to only 15% in the final hour. Humidity was around 80% throughout the day and the temperature remained consistent for the most part, beginning at 18.8 C and finishing at 20.5 C. Visibility was good all day. Raptor Observations: The day began relatively slow but began to pick up at about 10:00 am EST. However, two Peregrine Falcons were seen at close range in the first two hours as well as a Northern Harrier. Things began to pick up in the afternoon with a good number of Sharp-shinned Hawks, Turkey Vultures and American Kestrels, in addition to a few Broad Wing Hawks and a couple other species. 4 resident Bald Eagles were seen today gliding over the marsh and not really going anywhere in a hurry. An immature Red-tailed Hawk was also seen a few times in the morning. Non-raptor Observations: Goldfinches were coming through today in good numbers and so were the Chimney Swifts. Didn't seem that there were nearly as many warblers around today. Blue Jays and Monarch numbers were relatively slow today. Blue Jays - 5561 Monarchs - 14 https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S48764023 Predictions: Tomorrow is supposed to start off cool, about 12 C and increasing to 18 C by the afternoon with winds from the west and mainly sunny skies. The winds will shift to a southern direction by mid-morning and are expected to increase throughout the day. Tomorrow may not be the best day for migration for most species of raptor, but hopefully we will get some nice surprises and a relatively steady flow coming through. ======================================================================== Report submitted by ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
