Weather: Good north winds started the day today, and continuing until shortly before 1pm local time, at which point it quickly switched to the southwest. Other than the first two hours of count, there was nothing but blue above the tower. Raptor Observations: Today was an excellent day for hawkwatching on the tower. The big excitement of the day was a beautiful light morph adult SWAINSON's HAWK that was observed at 10:45am local time, and all 3 observers at the time were able to get on it. Aside from that, there were good flights of Turkey Vultures and Sharp-shinned Hawks, which made up most of the 1255 total birds. Also decent flights of Red-tailed Hawk (31) and Northern Harriers (21). Yet another 4 Buteo day, just this time we were hoping for yet another early Roughie, and as expected it was a no-show. Non-raptor Observations: Not a whole lot of non-raptor observations today. A single Chimney Swift getting on the later end of migrating. 7800 Blue Jays were counted migrating, along with 14 Monarch butterflies and a few Black Saddlebags. Predictions: It looks like tomorrow will be all north and northeast winds. Hopefully we'll have another good TV flight. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Sean Jenniskens ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ More site information at hawkcount.org: http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=100 _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
