Unfortunately there weren't many birds to see, but they are spending a few days in the area for birding so hopefully there will be more birds elsewhere. Weather: Once again, today was a very hot day up on the tower, with temperatures as high as 34C, with no shade hawk-watchers were really feeling the heat. Wind, as well as cloud cover were minimal throughout the day. Raptor Observations: Numbers of migrating raptors were low, but a little higher than yesterday, most came by the tower in late morning. The most excitement for the day was in the early morning, when a female American Kestrel came over the tower, a Merlin came by, chased it down under the trees. The American Kestrel was never seen again, and the Merlin popped out approximately 15 minutes later heading West. I assume it to be the same Merlin that hung around yesterday. Non-raptor Observations: Non-raptor migration was surprisingly not so slow early in the morning, mainly for birds such as Cedar Waxwings (530), American Goldfinches (437), and swallows (428 including Purple Martins). The first migrant American Pipit was heard flying over. Visit the days eBird Checklist for full list of non-raptor-migrants http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S31470178 There were 9 Black Saddlebags, 5 Green Darners, and 2 Twelve-spotted Skimmers noted migrating past, as well as 4 Monarchs. Predictions: Moderately strong W-SW winds throuhgout the day tomorrow, with risk of thunderstorms in the afternoon and a high of 30C. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Sean Jenniskens ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization.
