Birders,
Since my post about long-staying birds at well reported locations went
out I been busy responding to irate readers, I got the hint. Something
was missing from my post. Yes, I think some posts are repetitive and not
well received by some. Yes, ebird is an alternative and potential
source of information but I am not suggesting that eBird replace Ontbirds.
Ontbirds remains the first and best place to get the word out and that
includes long-staying birds. Birders expect updates and would like to
know if a bird is around or not. Ontbirds is the best place for
reporting interesting, rare or unusual birds anywhere in Ontario. I
would never ask for a prohibition on reporting birds on Ontbirds. That
just doesn't make sense. I regret that my previous post did not clearly
state that.
Bottom line if a post is not of interest use the delete key. If posters
try to follow our posting guidelines, use a subject line that includes
the bird in question along with general location (something like "Smew
near Cornwall" works) the reader can decide whether to open a post or not.
There is a link to posting guidelines at the bottom of this and every
Ontbirds message.
I hope put this puts an end to people's concern but if you have
continued concern let me know and I will try to respond.
