The oppressive, full cloud cover turned ominous in the afternoon and it began to rain at 1:30. Raptor Observations: An amazing first bird of the day at 10:30 was a light-colouration Rough-legged Hawk! It went by to the north, trying to soar for a while, but really just being buffeted around. The next and final 3 raptors came in close succession to each other just after 11am; 2 female Northern Harriers that sped by the tower, and an immature Red-tail that spiraled its way across the marsh. Non-raptor Observations: 4 Great Black-backed Gulls made an appearance mid-morning, dwarfing a nearby Ring-billed Gull. 115 Cedar Waxwings, 16 American Crows, 1 American Robin, 14 Rusty Blackbirds, and 25 American Goldfinches were the only non-raptors that deemed the weather appropriate for migrating today. It was really quite quiet all day, with a Winter Wren calling sporadically, and few chickadees, two Golden-crowned Kinglets, an American Tree Sparrow, and a White-crowned Sparrow hanging around the tower. 10 species of ducks were in the marsh, along with Pied-billed Grebe and American Coot. See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S25897851 Predictions: The rain will clear up before the morning and the day will bring SW winds all day. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
