Observation start time: 07:00:00
Observation end time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Jennifer Lyon
Observers: Bill Read, Dave Brown, Derek Lyon, Keith Sealy,
Mac McAlpine, Mark Cunningham, Tom Bolohan
Visitors:
At least 35 visitors today even with the weather....and a big thanks to
those who stuck it out to help with today's count.
Weather:
Definitely not hawkwatching weather with light rain on and off and
eventually a couple of heavy downpours as the cold front crossed the area.
Temp still warm enough for shorts and t-shirts...hitting a high of 21C and
then dropping through the afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
The day began in the rain with an osprey being our first bird and a nice
peregrine showing well high along the cliff. The rain stopped but the
stronger SW winds continued and the counters and visitors were happy to see
aother 4 peregrines go through on the same flight path. A merlin zipped up
from the lake and up and past the counters in the 3rd hour. Several
sharpies and AK's were also seen until the torrential rains began. After
an approx. 2 hr rain delay, only a few more shins and 1 more AK was seen
before the dark clouds came through again. We called it a day but what an
excellent peregrine viewing day! Total birds for the day was just 49.
Non-raptor Observations:
Blue Jays (107 counted), C. Waxwings, Gray Catbird, Gr. Yellowlegs
(flyover), N. Flicker, C. Nighthawk, C. Loon, Killdeer
32 Monarchs counted from the mound
Saddlebags and Green darners (but a lot less were seen today than during
the week)
Predictions:
Will definitely be a better flight day on Sunday with light NE and ENE
winds.
