Weather:
Couldn't have asked for better conditions today. The sky was mostly clear
at the start but it wasn't long before an array of puffy white clouds began
to drift into view, gifting us a wonderful spotting backdrop for most of
the day. Like yesterday, a nice combination of cool temperatures and warm
sun kept things pleasant throughout. The wind was moderate and out of the
west and northwest.
Raptor Observations:
It was an exceptional day of Broad-winged Hawk movement. Liftoff occurred
around 1000 am and thereafter each hour featured at least one massive
kettle or lengthy stream, often observable relatively low and close,
delighting the many onlookers below. Sharp-shinned Hawks had themselves
another good day. And even more impressively, so did Northern Harriers. Not
since 2007 has there been a better first two weeks of Northern Harrier
movement at Lake Erie Metropark.
Non-raptor Observations:
Northern Rough-winged Swallow (230+), Warbling Vireo (1), Gray Catbird (1),
Common Yellowthroat (1), Cape May Warbler (4), Common Grackle (18),
Red-winged Blackbird (40+), Canada Goose (30+), Forster's Tern (3),
sandpiper sp. (20+)
Predictions:
Sunny skies with warmer temps and strong southwest wind.
