Puffy white clouds eventually crept into view, breaking up the monotony above. But a boorish wall of lake fog refused to budge, limiting visibility throughout. Hot and humid, temperatures climbed into the 80s, sending us searching for shade by early afternoon. The wind was light and out of the south early, shifting easterly later. Raptor Observations: Quality over quantity on what was a mostly subdued start to the season. A female American Kestrel kicked things off, slipping into the trees off to our left in the early morning. Two photogenic Northern Harriers decided to cross low and close thereafter. Non-raptor Observations: Common Loon (1), Canada Goose (24), Forster's Tern (4), Caspian Tern (2), Solitary Sandpiper (1), Killdeer (1), Belted Kingfisher (1), Bobolink (3), Cedar Waxwing (50+), Red-winged Blackbird (130+), Purple Martin (4), Northern Rough-winged Swallow (2), Barn Swallow (7), Tree Swallow (5), Chimney Swift (6), Baltimore Oriole (2), Warbling Vireo (3), American Goldfinch (15+), Mourning Dove (5), Blue Jay (2) Predictions: Partly cloudy with high temps, light southwest wind and a 50 percent chance of afternoon rain. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
