Today after viewing the Painted Bunting on and near the little feeder somebody put up alongside the ravine (brilliant idea!) around 10 a.m., CJ Burnell and I visited Sedgewick Park to see which birds were coping in the extreme cold (approximately -21C windchill). All five warbler species were present (Tennessee, Orange-crowned, Nashville, Yellow-rumped, Wilson's). We didn't see the Wilson's, but spoke to a friend who had it earlier. The warblers are sticking very close to the ground and closer to the treatment ponds; the Tennessee and Yellow-rumped were observed taking midges directly from the ponds. Winter Wrens, Golden-crowned Kinglets and a Hermit Thrush were also seen well. A Cooper's and a Red-tailed Hawk were hunting the area.
The bunting was seen along the ravine alongside 1 Arkendo, one street W of Winston Churchill, S of Lakeshore. Sedgewick Park is reached via QEW to Third Line, S to Hixon Rd and park at end, or park at Jehovah's Witnesses church (except Sundays). Several species were seen in the yew hedge in that parking lot. Happy Birding, bird nerds!
