Hi all, Yesterday afternoon, I photographed a 1st winter Thayer's Gull at the Minden landfill. Thanks to Jean Iron and Ron Pittaway for confirmation. Also at the dump was a 1st winter Iceland Gull, a 2nd winter Great Black-backed Gull, and 2 Bald Eagles (an adult and a 1st year bird).
The dump in Haliburton had at least 4 different Glaucous Gulls (2 first winter, a third winter, and an adult), a first winter Great Black-backed, and a single adult Ring-billed Gull. There were also 2 Bald Eagles here (an adult and a 3rd year bird). The Minden landfill is located north of Minden. Take Hwy 35 to Scotch Line Rd W, turn west and drive until you see the dump on your left. If you tell the attendant you are birding, they are usually very accomodating. Please park away from the main dumping area, out of the way of normal activity. The Haliburton Landfill is located off Cty Rd 21, on Industrial Park Rd., just W of Haliburton. Same procedure applies here also...be respectful and stay out of the way. Good birding, Ed Poropat Haliburton, ON _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
