Weather: It was a gorgeous day to be up on the tower with temperatures increasing to 18C and a fantastic array of interesting-looking clouds. Winds went from N to NW to SW to S and with low, menacing clouds on the horizon for much of the day, visibility only went up to 9km. Raptor Observations: A pretty decent day considering the wind coming from half of the compass points. Turkey Vultures flew at a great distance for a couple hours in the middle of the day and we were happy to have one particularly good group of birds that included Vultures, Red-tailed Hawks (2 of which flew by almost at eye level), Red-Shouldered Hawks, Sharp-shinned Hawks and Northern Harriers! 10 species today. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jays seem to be past the prime of their migration, while American Crows are slowly on the increase now. Starlings, Red-winged Blackbirds and Rusty Blackbirds continue past in large flocks. The trees and bushes around the tower were busy with Kinglets, Yellow-rumped Warblers and Sparrows (Song, Swamp, White-crowned). The first two Juncos of the season were seen today, feeding alongside White-crowned Sparrows in the road by the tower. See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S20252063 Predictions: Winds are supposed to continue from the SW tomorrow, with temperatures up to 20C and a bit of cloud cover. Good to know that the birds that may arrive won't get lost in a blue sky! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
