Recent reports to October 9, 2014 An adult WHITE-EYED VIREO was found on the 3rd and likely the same bird has been present every day since the 6th at the west end of the Britannia Conservation Area ridge. This species is an accidental transient in spring and fall. There have been very few reports in the Ottawa-Gatineau District. This species is at the most northern part of it's breeding range in south western Ontario with very small numbers breeding along Lake Erie especially at Point Pelee, Rondeau and Long Point. A first winter ROSS'S GOOSE, likely the same bird that was at Andrew Haydon Park from September 26th through the 28th and on Carling Ave October 1st was found again on the 3rd on the corn stubble at Carling Ave and Herzberg Rd. Opinions from some experts that suggest that this bird may be a Ross's X Lesser Snow Goose hybrid are being considered. Another ROSS'S GOOSE was reported south of Russell on the 8th. The Almonte lagoons continue to be active with GREATER WHITE-FRONTED (1), CACKLING (18) and CANADA (3200) GEESE with NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN and BLUE-WINGED TEAL on the 6th. On the 7th a BONAPARTE'S GULL and a RUDDY DUCK were also present. On the Ottawa River REDHEAD, COMMON LOON, a few RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, LESSER SCAUP (200) and RED-NECKED GREBE (2) on the 7th and a flock of 300 BRANT on the 9th. Shorebirds continue to be hard to find. The small pond on Greenbank Rd near Barnsdale Rd had KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS (2), PECTORAL SANDPIPER (11) and WILSON'S SNIPE (32) on the 4th. The Giroux ponds had a couple of DUNLIN and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER (2) were at the Masson lagoons on the 5th and 6th. Continuing to move through our area are: ORANGE-CROWNED, NASHVILLE, YELLOW-RUMPED, TENNESSEE, NORTHERN PARULA, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and a few BLACK-THROATED GREEN and BLUE, AMERICAN REDSTART and PALM WARBLERS, BLUE-HEADED and a few RED-EYED VIREO, many RUBY and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, SWAINSON'S and HERMIT THRUSH, RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and a few FOX and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS. A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was found east of the Rockcliffe airport on the 2nd. In Pakenham PURPLE FINCH (23) on the 7th and a continuing male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on the 9th. SURF SCOTER (3) were found on the Mississippi River in Carlton Place on the 6th. Extremely late HOUSE WREN were found at several locations and outside our area an early LAPLAND LONGSPUR was found west of Cobden on the 5th. On the 8th an AMERICAN WOODCOCK and EASTERN BLUEBIRD (12) were found south of the International Airport. On the 9th a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was found on Milton Rd and a first winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found on Petrie Island. Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations. Good birding. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
